Resulta muy fácil engancharse al trabajo de Meg Loeks y la historia que tiene detrás. Nos ha permitido hacerle una entrevista antes de la cita que la traerá a España por primera vez. Será en la parte Family Time de Photo Forum Fest en Barcelona, el próximo 15 de marzo.
¿Cuando supiste que querías ser fotógrafa? ¿Por vocación? ¿Cómo empezaste?
Cuando era pequeña mis padres estaban suscritos a National Geographic. Yo solía guardar las revistas y pasaba horas mirando las fotografías asombrada. Fue en esa época cuando despertó mi pasión por la fotografía. Empecé realizando shootings y me encantó el proceso de desarrollo… Creo que más que disparar en sí. En aquel tiempo realizaba fotografía de naturaleza. Avancé rápido cuando comencé a tener hijos y fue cuando cambié al digital. Quería mejorar y tener un mayor conocimiento sobre técnica fotográfica y empecé a realizar cursos a través de Click Photo School. Estuve incontables madrugadas y noches estudiando. Me costó dos años pero finalmente encontré mi estilo como fotógrafa. En este tiempo he desarrollado mi amor por la luz suave, tonos ricos y la fotografía como estilo de vida. Mi inspiración era, y sigue siendo a día de hoy, la naturaleza y mis hijos.
When I was little my parents had a subscription to National Geographic. I used to save the magazines and spend hours gazing at the photographs in awe. It was around that time that I developed a passion for photography. I started shooting film and loved the developing process… I think more than shooting itself. At this time I was mainly photographing nature. Fast forward to when I started having children is when I switched to digital. I wanted to improve and have a better understanding of the technical side of photography so I started taking courses through Click Photo School. I spent countless early mornings and late nights studying. It took a couple of years but I found my voice as a photographer. I developed a love for low light, rich tones and lifestyle photography. My inspirations were and still are to this day, nature and my children.
¿Has practicado siempre esta temática?
Cuando empecé mi carrera como fotógrafa era muy joven. Mi principal interés en esa época era la naturaleza. Me encanta pasar tiempo al aire libre y me criaron para tener un profundo amor y aprecio por ello. Ahora que he formado mi propia familia, me encanta entrelazar la naturaleza y la fotografía familiar.
When I started my photography journey years ago I was very young. My main subjects at that time was nature. I love spending time outdoors and was raised to have a deep love and appreciation for it. Now raising a family of my own, I love to interweave nature and family photography.
¿Cuáles son tus referentes visuales?
Tengo muchos referentes visuales. Me atraen los maestros holandeses y el uso que hacen de la luz y los tonos ricos en sus pinturas. Vermeer normalmente usa una única fuente de luz cuando trabaja y yo prefiero hacer también lo mismo. Otro artista por el que me siento influenciada es Norman Rockwell. Me inspira su manera creativa de contar historias a través del arte. Por último adoro el trabajo de Mary Cassatt. La manera en que documentó la maternidad a través de sus pinturas me ha influenciado en mis autorretratos.
I have several visual references. I’m drawn to Dutch Masters and their use of light and rich tones in their paintings. Vermeer often used one single light source in work and I prefer to do the same. Another influencer is Norman Rockwell. His creative way of storytelling through is art inspires me. Lastly I love the work of Mary Cassatt. The way she documented motherhood through her paintings often influences my self portraits.
¿Dónde crees que está la clave para conseguir transmitir lo que quieres en cada fotografía?
La luz es definitivamente el punto de partida para el estado de ánimo dentro de mi trabajo. Me atraen los focos dramáticos de luz que resaltan mis sujetos y simplifican mi marco. Siempre uso una sola fuente de luz si es posible. Esto se logra a menudo mediante la manipulación de la luz, ya sea natural o creada.
Light is definitely the starting point for mood within my work. I’m drawn to dramatic pockets of light that highlight my subjects and simplify my frame. I often use just one light source if possible. This is often achieved by manipulating the light whether it’s natural or created.
¿Cómo compaginas tu vida cotidiana familiar con el éxito?
Conseguir el balance entre mi vida familiar y mi trabajo es uno de mis mayores retos. No es un secreto lo duro que es emprender tu propio negocio. La familia siempre es lo principal, pero eso significa que paso muchas madrugadas y noches trabajando para llegar a todo. Una de las cosas que me ayuda a organizarme es apuntar mi horario en el calendario de mi escritorio. Nada innovador, pero me ayuda a mantenerme concentrada y organizada. Con los años he aprendido a decir que no a algunas cosas para las que no tenía tiempo o no encajaban en mi trabajo. Creo que es un desafío al que muchos nos enfrentamos, por lo difícil que es rechazar algunas oportunidades que se nos presentan. Estoy constantemente aprendiendo y creciendo.
Keeping balance between my family life and work has always been one of my biggest struggles. It’s no secret that it’s hard running your own business. Family always comes first, but that also means there are a lot of early mornings and late nights spent working to keep up with it all. One thing that helps me stay organized is writing out my schedule on my desk calendar. Nothing groundbreaking but it helps me stay on task and organized. Over the years I’ve also become better at saying no to things I don’t have time for or are not a good fit. Again I think many of us can relate to this challenge and how hard it really is to say no to every opportunity that comes our way. I’m still learning and growing.
¿Será tu primera visita a España? ¿Te gusta en especial algún fotógrafo español?
Esta será mi primera vez en España y estoy muy emocionada por la oportunidad y por experimentar esta cultura tan rica. Me encanta el trabajo de Mónica Cutraro, Sol Earanare and Carla Monge, que además tengo el honor de llamarlas mis amigas.

¿Cómo afectó a tu fotografía el hecho de empezar a utilizar la luz artificial?
Uso mis flashes Profoto justo cuando quiero conseguir una luz natural. A menudo con una sola fuente de luz consigo dramatismo y direccionalidad. Lo que ha cambiado es no tener que depender completamente de la luz natural, que nunca es constante. Ahora tengo mucha más flexibilidad para disparar cuando yo quiero. Ya no estoy restringida a disparar durante las horas del día o a ciertas horas. Adoro que la gente a menudo me pregunte si he usado luz natural o artificial en una imagen. Eso quiere decir que la luz artificial ha hecho el trabajo que yo quería, crear luz que parece exactamente luz natural.
I use my Profoto lights just like I would with natural light. Often with one single light source that provides dramatic, directional light. The thing that has changed is not having to rely completely on natural light which is never constant. I have much more flexibility now to shoot whenever I feel like it. I am no longer restricted to only shooting during daylight hours or certain times of the day. I love that people often have to ask whether I’ve used natural light or created in a shot. That means the lights are doing what I want them to do which is creating light that looks exactly like natural light.
¿Qué te inspira?
Mi mejor inspiración son mis hijos. Ellos son la razón por la que cojo mi cámara cada día. Como he comentado también me atrae la naturaleza y los paisajes. Cuando mis hijos sean mayores, puede que vaya en esa dirección, que irónicamente es donde comencé.
My greatest inspiration is my children. They are the reason I pick up my camera every single day. As I mentioned before though I’m also drawn to nature and landscapes. When my children are older I can see myself shifting that direction which ironically is where I started.
¿Qué llevas en tu mochila cuando tienes una sesión?
Siempre llevo mi cámara Canon 5D Mark IV, lente Sigma Art 85mm f/1.4, el objetivo Canon 35mm f/1.4L, y el flash Profoto A1. Sigma Art 85 es mi lente favorita. Es muy rápida y nítida y es la que uso al aire libre. Mi 35mm es mi elección de gran angular. Me encanta usarla para fotografiar en interiores porque funciona muy bien en espacios reducidos y con poca luz. Mi flash Profoto A1 es mi luz cuando estoy fuera de casa. Es muy portable y fácil de usar.
I always bring my Canon Mark IV camera body, Sigma Art 85mm f/1.4, Canon 35mm f/1.4L, and Profoto A1. The Sigma Art 85 is my favorite lens. It’s fast and sharp and what I mainly use outside. My 35mm is my go to wide angle lens. I love to use it shooting indoors because it works great in tight spaces and low light. My Profoto A1 is my go to light when I’m out and about. It’s very portable and easy to use.
¿Qué esperas de tu visita a España? ¿Qué nos vas a enseñar en la masterclass ?
Estoy deseando interactuar con otros fotógrafos. Es una de las principales razones por las que me encanta enseñar, porque aprendo mucho también. En mi masterclass hablaré sobre la luz, natural y artificial, y cómo manipularla. Como contar historias de forma creativa, con intención y usando capas… Pondré mucho hincapié en la teoría del color y en cómo añadir capas dentro de una imagen . También haré una demostración de cómo añadir profundidad y resaltar los colores. Además haré una demostración sobre cómo uso flashes Profoto en mi día a día. Estas son solo algunas cosas que trataré en mi master class.
I’m really looking forward to interacting with other photographers. It’s one of the main reasons I enjoy teaching so much because I learn a lot too. In my master class I will cover light, both natural and created, and how to manipulate it. I discuss how to creatively storytell by being intentional and using layers. I will highlight color theory and how it can add a layer of visual interest within an image. There will also be an editing demonstration on how to add depth and enhance colors. In addition, I will demonstrate how I use Profoto lighting in my everyday lifestyle. These are just a few of the things I cover in my master class.
